NYC "Intergroup" is an Al-Anon Information Service (AIS). Intergroup is also a Literature Distribution Center (LDC).

In line with Al-Anon's 7th tradition, Intergroup depends solely upon the support of the Al-Anon membership to realize its mission and is directly accountable to the groups for the work it does, through Intergroup Representatives or IRs.  We have a Board of Trustees elected by the IRs at their annual meeting and an assembly of IRs.

What is an Intergroup Representative (IR)?

An IR is an Al-Anon member elected by an Al-Anon meeting (Al-Anon Family Group or AFG) to represent the meeting’s interest four times a year at Intergroup Representative meetings.  IRs serve for a suggested term of three years.

Click here for a more detailed explanation of the duties of an Intergroup Representative (IR) in NYC.

What is a Group Representative (GR)?
A GR is an Al-Anon member who represents their meeting at (local) Al-Anon World Service district meetings and (regional) area assemblies.

How does NYC’s Intergroup fit into the Al-Anon service structure?

Al-Anon service structure begins with groups. Groups are organized into Districts and then Areas,  which belong to the Al-Anon World Service. The headquarters of Al-Anon is called the World Service Organization or WSO.  Intergroup is a service arm that serves Al-Anon groups in a specific geographic area and is directly responsible to the groups it serves.

Al-Anon provides two chains of communication from its members to World Service.

1) Communication via Intergroup
     a.  Local meeting (AFG) > elects IR > who attends quarterly meetings of Intergroup whose focus is stated above.
     b.  Intergroup’s liaison officer is elected by Intergroup members and participates in the Area World Service Committee.

2) Communication via local District
     a.  Local meeting (AFG) > elects GR > who attends monthly or bi-monthly meetings of local district AND quarterly meetings of area assembly. NYC’s area is called New York South.
     b.  Each area assembly elects a delegate who attends the World Service Conference.
